How to Choose an Auto Body Shop

If you are needing the services of an auto body shop, chances are that you have had a downturn in luck recently. An automobile accident is a major life event, especially if there are injuries and substantial damage. It is probably a very stressful time for you, especially if the the damage sustained to your vehicle will cause inconveniences to travel to work and your financial stability has been compromised.  You need to find a good body shop that you can depend on, to help alleviate the situation back to normal.

The best source of finding a reputable shop is looking at their reputation.  Ask friends, co-workers you trust and family members for referrals.  If no one has any suggestions, then look to the automotive trade journals and magazines, and insurance company referrals.  Insurance companies usually have a database of automotive body and paint shops that have proven to be dependable, reasonable, certified and do excellent work.  They have already pre-screened them, so you are saving yourself some trouble.

If you are still looking and deciding yourself, then look for these qualities in a good shop as you visit them to get estimates:

  • They should have certifications visibly displayed.  Good shops will keep taking refresher courses and stay up to the minute on new techniques and products offered by organizations such as:
    • American Automobile Association (AAA)
    • Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Repair (I-CAR)
    • National Institute of Automobile Service Excellence (ASE)
    • Automotive Service Association (ASA)
  • Their workplace is organized, tidy and clean, showing pride, professionalism and commitment to their work and reputation
  • Ask to see an example of work completed, either in an automobile on the premises, in a picture or by giving you a reference to call
  • Ask what guarantees they provide.  They should give up to five years for part and labor
